About
With 20 years of experience in commercial jet engine design, followed by 8 years leading technical teams in the global Oil & Gas Power Industry and an additional 8 years in real estate and residential construction, I bring a unique perspective to the table.
Building a house can be confusing. Doing a major remodel project raises a lot of questions. Dealing with building officials, underwriters & appraisers can be a challenge. All of these scenarios can be costly. Who do I speak to first? What is my responsibility? Who can I trust and why?
Construction - New homes, remodeling, removing walls, repairing damaged foundations. Who do you trust? Architects are trained in design and some engineering, but most of them are expensive and booked months out. General contractors vary in cost, experience, and reliability but can't handle structural engineering. How do you decide? Who can be your advocate?
Foundation issues - That horizontal crack in the wall, how serious is it? Is there a cost-effective repair? How do you make sure your house isn’t collapsing? Who can you trust to do a legitimate repair without upselling? What are your options? Do you need to level it out or monitor it? Is it stable?
Structural Inspections - Who is available that can schedule quickly? You need to close that house, and you’re on a timeline. Who is willing to follow up with construction professionals to make sure the repairs are done right? How do you ensure the inspection identifies the real underlying issue and still satisfies the underwriter?
I designed jet engines and aircraft systems for 20 years, did system integration of aero-derivative power plants all over the world for 8 years, and spent the last decade buying houses, remodeling houses, building new homes, creating drawings, and doing structural design & analysis. I have actually built houses using my own tools and have managed projects with all their moving parts, from the hole in the ground to the final bit of paint and trim. When you need a solution, it really helps to have someone who speaks the language of construction. You need to get the job done within budget in the best way possible.
I understand the challenges you face when finding an engineering company to navigate the inspection process or resolve real estate hurdles. I know the uncertainty that comes from that DIY project and gaining the confidence to select the right build & layout. Whether it's dealing with inspectors or ensuring the proper use of building materials, I've been through it myself.
My goal is your goal. Design, drawings, structural consultation, stamped and sealed drawing review. DraftLab and The Residential Engineer stand ready to help you get the home you deserve at a price you can afford. I’m the engineer who answers his phone.
